Gold prices are hovering near $4,400 an ounce as investors eagerly await new US inflation data that could shape expectations for the Federal Reserve’s impending interest-rate decision. Spot gold saw a rise of about 0.4%, reaching roughly $4,418.87 an ounce, while gold futures inched up to around $4,461.82. The weakening of the US dollar has played a supportive role for the precious metal, as it makes dollar-denominated gold more appealing to buyers using other currencies.
The US Dollar Index has dipped to approximately 98.74, which benefits gold because a weaker dollar makes the metal less expensive for international investors. However, rising US Treasury yields are exerting some pressure. The 10-year Treasury yield increased following plans to purchase up to $6 billion of longer-term government securities. As bond yields rise, they can diminish demand for gold since government securities offer interest income, unlike gold, which does not generate regular interest. The opportunity cost of holding gold can thus become more significant as yields climb.
Additionally, oil prices are adding to inflation concerns in the financial markets. Brent crude has recently reached roughly $100 a barrel, fueling worries about renewed inflationary pressures. Higher energy costs can drive up expenses for businesses and consumers, complicating efforts to control inflation. Consequently, investors are closely monitoring both oil and gold prices to gauge the global economic outlook.
Attention is now focused on upcoming US inflation data, which is expected to provide critical insights into the future trajectory of interest rates. The release of the Producer Price Index will precede the Consumer Price Index. If inflation readings surpass expectations, it could heighten forecasts for tighter monetary policy, potentially weighing down gold. Conversely, if inflation is softer, it might bolster expectations for lower interest rates, lending additional support to the precious metal.
The demand for safe-haven assets like gold is also being driven by geopolitical uncertainties, particularly ongoing tensions in the Middle East. As gold trades close to the $4,400 mark, the market remains attentive to US inflation figures for clues on the Federal Reserve’s next steps. The data will be pivotal in determining whether gold maintains its upward trajectory or faces renewed pressure in upcoming trading sessions.
