In a bid to bolster economic ties, India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in separate discussions with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Riikka Purra, as well as the Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto. These meetings aimed to enhance cooperation in various sectors and explore avenues for trade and investment between the two nations.
The conversations centered around enhancing collaboration in pivotal areas such as digitalisation, innovation, research and development, and nurturing startups. Additionally, both parties examined the potential for strengthened partnerships in emerging technological fields, including artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, and space. Sustainability also featured prominently in the dialogue.
A significant aspect of the talks was the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Both countries deliberated on how this agreement could serve as a catalyst for boosting bilateral trade, attracting investment, and creating new business opportunities. The pact is seen as a crucial step towards deepening economic engagement between India and Finland, leveraging the broader context of India-EU relations.
These discussions occur against the backdrop of ongoing negotiations between India and the European Union over a comprehensive trade agreement. Such an agreement is anticipated to significantly strengthen economic relations and foster collaboration across various strategic sectors, benefiting all parties involved.
