Numan Kurtulmuş, the Speaker of Türkiye’s Parliament, has expressed optimism about an upcoming disarmament initiative concerning the PKK and its affiliates, suggesting it could foster stability in Iraq and aid wider peace endeavors in the region. During a meeting in Ankara with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Heybet Halbusi, Kurtulmuş indicated that the anticipated process, which is slated to commence next month, has the potential to bolster peace and stability in Iraq and enhance security in Syria.
Kurtulmuş connected this initiative to Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to achieve a “terror-free Türkiye” and a “terror-free region.” He emphasized the importance of increased collaboration among regional nations and the resolution of enduring conflicts. The strengthening of Türkiye-Iraq relations was also underscored, with Kurtulmuş referencing the agreements and memorandums established during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Iraq in 2024, as well as strategic agreements formed after the Iraqi prime minister’s trip to Türkiye in July.
Another significant area of cooperation identified was the Development Road Project. This proposed transport corridor aims to enhance connectivity between Asia and Europe via Iraq and Türkiye, promoting economic growth throughout the area. Kurtulmuş conveyed Türkiye’s strong support for expediting the project’s progress and expressed hope that all its components would become operational swiftly.
Describing the Development Road Project as more than just an economic endeavor, Kurtulmuş highlighted its potential to link communities, cities, and cultures through mutually advantageous cooperation. This broader vision aligns with Türkiye’s strategic goals in the region, further emphasizing the country’s commitment to fostering stability and growth through regional partnerships.
