What made India’s 96-run victory over New Zealand in the T20 World Cup final so compelling was not just the individual performances, but the seamless way in which every player found their moment when the team needed it most. From Abhishek Sharma’s blazing powerplay fifty to Bumrah’s devastating slow yorkers, this was a team effort of the highest order. History, as India proved, is made by collectives.
The top-order batters set the stage with an exceptional first innings. Sharma’s 50 off 18 balls ignited the powerplay, and Samson (89 off 46) and Kishan (54 off 25) carried the momentum forward. India reached 191 for one at the drinks break, and even a late wobble — four wickets and two boundaries in the final five overs — couldn’t prevent a total of 255. Shivam Dube’s extraordinary final over, taking his score from 2 off 2 to 26 off 8, was a fitting footnote to a great batting performance.
With the ball, Bumrah was the standout performer, but the entire bowling unit kept New Zealand’s batters under constant pressure throughout the chase. The target of 255 was never going to be achieved without a perfect batting performance from New Zealand, and their top order ensured that never happened. Finn Allen’s dismissal for nine, compared to his semi-final century, was particularly symbolic.
New Zealand’s Tim Seifert offered some resistance with a half-century, and India’s fielding was not without blemish — Dube and Hardik Pandya both grassed catches. But the result was never in doubt, and India’s collective excellence carried the day as it has throughout this tournament.
Two World Cup titles in succession is a tribute to Indian cricket’s depth of talent and strength of character. This team has set a benchmark that will be very difficult for any side to match.
