Spotify has unveiled new strategies to manage the presence of AI-generated artists on its platform, starting this September. The streaming service will introduce an “AI persona” label to identify artist profiles and tracks created through artificial intelligence. This initiative is part of a broader effort to help users discern between authentic musicians and AI-generated identities, while also safeguarding real artists from being overshadowed by computer-generated content.
In a bid to maintain authenticity and preserve the exposure of genuine artists, Spotify plans to exclude AI personas from its personalized recommendation systems by default. This measure allows listeners to enjoy curated playlists that focus on human artists. While AI-generated artists can voluntarily disclose their nature, Spotify has also committed to using a mix of human oversight and AI-driven tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas actively.
The decision reflects Spotify’s response to the burgeoning volume of AI-generated music, which has become increasingly prevalent. Highlighting the challenge posed by artificial and low-quality tracks, Spotify previously announced the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month span. Such actions underscore the company’s focus on maintaining a high-quality music library amidst the rising tide of AI-generated content flooding digital music platforms.
As generative AI technology becomes more ingrained in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes the growing demand for transparency. Many listeners are keen to know whether the artist behind their favorite tracks is a real person or an AI-crafted entity. By labeling AI personas and refining recommendation algorithms, Spotify aims to address these evolving listener preferences while fostering an environment where genuine musicians can continue to thrive.
