Turkish Ministers in Riyadh to Bolster Mecca Defense Alliance Amid Regional Tensions

Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Turkish officials have traveled to Riyadh to participate in a crucial meeting of the Strategic Political and Defense Committee of the Mecca Joint Defense Alliance. This alliance, formed by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan in August 2026, aims to bolster regional security and defense cooperation. The meeting comes at a time of heightened concern over Saudi Arabia’s ongoing conflicts with the Houthi movement in Yemen.

The Turkish delegation includes Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, and Chief of General Staff Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu. Their discussions will center on Türkiye’s support for Saudi Arabia and address threats to regional security, such as attacks on Saudi territory and potential risks to key sites and civilian infrastructure.

In addition to addressing immediate security concerns, the alliance’s meeting is set to focus on its institutional development. Plans are underway to establish a permanent secretariat in Riyadh and a military headquarters, with personnel assignments anticipated once these preparations are complete. This development marks a significant step in strengthening the alliance’s operational capabilities.

Officials from the three countries will also deliberate on the alliance’s future structure and strategies for addressing regional security challenges. These discussions will include ensuring the freedom of navigation on international trade routes and exploring peaceful solutions to ongoing conflicts. The Mecca agreement seeks to build a cooperative defense framework among regional countries, rather than forming a bloc against external powers.

Türkiye has expressed that the alliance has the potential to expand, possibly integrating additional regional members in the future. This expansion would further enhance collaborative efforts to maintain regional stability and security, reflecting the alliance’s commitment to a cooperative approach.
