Việt Nam and Denmark have taken a significant step in their bilateral relations by agreeing to establish a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This announcement was made during discussions between Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen. The new partnership is set to enhance cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, renewable energy, and technology, as the two nations approach the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026.
The elevation of relations aims to deepen political ties and facilitate long-term collaboration in key economic and strategic areas. Denmark now joins the ranks of European Union member states that maintain a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Việt Nam, marking a significant milestone in their international relations.
Central to this upgraded relationship is the focus on trade and investment. Both leaders underscored the importance of the EU–Việt Nam Free Trade Agreement and agreed to improve market access, encouraging businesses to integrate more actively into international supply chains. Denmark expressed a keen interest in expanding its investments in Việt Nam, particularly in high-tech and environmentally friendly industries. The Vietnamese leadership, in turn, welcomed contributions from Danish companies such as LEGO, Maersk, Pandora, Carlsberg, and Vestas, emphasizing the need for investment promotion and policy dialogue.
Renewable energy and sustainable development are set to be major priorities under this partnership. Denmark has pledged to share its expertise in supporting Việt Nam’s transition to cleaner energy sources and improving energy efficiency, aligning with Việt Nam’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The two countries also plan to collaborate on large-scale renewable energy projects, including offshore wind power, and to expand cooperation in seaports, logistics, and green maritime transport to bolster economic growth.
In the realm of technology and innovation, both governments have agreed to strengthen ties in science, technology, and digital transformation. Areas of focus include artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and biotechnology, with an emphasis on fostering partnerships among universities, research institutions, and businesses. Education, healthcare, smart urban development, and cultural exchanges are also on the agenda for further cooperation.
On the international stage, Tô Lâm and Frederiksen reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and international law, highlighting the importance of strengthening EU-ASEAN relations. Việt Nam expressed its readiness to support Denmark’s cooperation efforts with ASEAN.
The leaders instructed relevant ministries and agencies to implement the new partnership’s commitments effectively and witnessed the exchange of cooperation documents between organizations and businesses from both nations. Prime Minister Frederiksen accepted an invitation to visit Việt Nam, with both parties eager to see tangible results from their newly upgraded partnership.
