President Donald Trump sparked controversy on Wednesday by comparing US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, claiming these actions effectively ended the 12-day Iran-Israel war. He asserted that the US military intervention was the decisive factor in halting hostilities.
Trump argued that the intense pressure and “hell” Iran experienced during the conflict, including the US strikes, had forced them to abandon their nuclear weapons ambitions. He publicly disagreed with intelligence reports that suggested a less impactful outcome of the strikes, maintaining that the nuclear sites were “completely destroyed.”
The conflict began with Israeli bombings of Iranian nuclear facilities, citing concerns about a potential nuclear weapons program. Iran consistently denied such intentions, maintaining its program was for peaceful energy. The 12-day conflict resulted in extensive damage and casualties.
A ceasefire, which Trump reportedly brokered, was in effect. The controversial analogy has drawn attention to the rhetoric used in describing military actions and their historical parallels.
