Türkiye’s Economy Boosted by 93% Drop in Traffic Violations

Türkiye has seen a significant reduction in dangerous driving offenses following the implementation of stricter traffic laws and enhanced enforcement measures earlier this year. The changes to the Highway Traffic Law, which came into effect on February 27, introduced more severe penalties for various offenses that pose major risks to road safety. This legislative move has been a key factor in improving driving behavior across the country.

One of the most remarkable improvements was in the area of dangerous lane-weaving violations, where drivers frequently change lanes at high speeds. Official statistics reveal a dramatic decrease in such offenses, with authorities detecting only 3,306 incidents between February 27 and May 31 this year, compared to 47,380 during the same timeframe last year—a staggering 93% drop. This decline is largely attributed to the combination of harsher penalties and increased road inspections nationwide.

The crackdown has also resulted in positive changes in other categories of traffic violations. Offenses related to tachograph records for commercial vehicle driving and rest-time saw an 80.2% decrease. Speeding violations were reduced by 55.1%, while the number of motorists failing to comply with police stop orders fell by 52.4%. Additionally, the incidence of helmet-related violations decreased by 36.4%, and cases of driving without a valid license dropped by 33.7%.

Authorities have also reported fewer instances of wrong-way driving, traffic sign violations, running red lights, drunk driving, and seat belt infractions. These improvements are part of the government’s broader strategy aimed at enhancing road safety, reducing accidents, and safeguarding lives and property across Türkiye.
