Technology developed by Ukrainian engineers under fire is about to be deployed to protect Gulf states from the same Iranian drones that have tormented Ukraine for years. President Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine will provide the US and Middle Eastern allies with drone defense equipment and expertise, following a wave of international requests.
Zelenskyy confirmed that he has personally spoken with leaders from the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait about the potential for defense cooperation. He also confirmed that a formal US request had been received and that he subsequently ordered both equipment and Ukrainian technical specialists to be provided. He described the arrangement as help for those who help Ukraine achieve peace with Russia.
The technology being offered is the product of necessity and ingenuity. Ukraine has faced an unprecedented drone assault from Russia, which has deployed Iranian-made Shaheds by the tens of thousands. To survive, Ukrainian engineers had to develop practical, affordable solutions fast. The result was a family of low-cost interceptor drones that can destroy Shaheds for as little as $1,000 per unit — revolutionizing the economics of air defense.
This disparity in cost has attracted global attention. European countries were reminded of the problem when Poland deployed expensive military aircraft to intercept cheap drones, spending orders of magnitude more than the threat was worth. Ukraine’s approach offers a far more rational solution to the asymmetric economics of drone warfare.
While the assistance demonstrates Ukraine’s growing global role, Zelenskyy was careful to set conditions. The equipment will only be provided if it does not compromise Ukraine’s own defenses. Additionally, he tied the offer to Ukraine’s diplomatic agenda, noting that cooperation will be extended to nations that actively support Kyiv’s efforts to end the war with Russia through a just and sustainable peace.
